Book Review: Lace One-Skein Wonders

Judith Durant brings us yet another wonderful One-Skein Wonders book. This time it is for Lace.

Lace One-Skein Wonders: 101 Projects Celebrating the Possibilities of Lace from Storey Publishing  is a fantastic book to have on hand. I am always looking for new patterns involving lacework. I am in a strong addiction right now with lace shawls and this book is going to feed it for some time to come!

Lace One-Skein Wonders is separated into five sections; From Head to Toe, Knits for Kids, It's a Wrap, Lacy Accessories, and For the Home. Each section offers quite a few patterns including many lovely pictures, quite a few charts, and also some written instructions.

There are 28 patterns for hats, mittens, gloves, socks, and cuffs in the From Head to Toe section! The pictures showcase the lovely lacework on these items very well and make me want to knit and wear each one.

My favorite section is It's a Wrap. It has 15 different patterns for shawls and stoles! Oh my goodness, I'm going to be knitting up quite a few of these. They are gorgeous. There are also 19 scarf patterns and 9 cowl patterns for all you that like this type of neckwear. I prefer shawls myself, as I do not like stuff up against my throat. I do knit a lot for gifts and I received this book at the perfect time for Christmas gift knitting, so don't think I won't use some of these absolutely lovely scarf and cowl patterns.

For the Home offers some really nice patterns as well for anything for sachets to dish cloths to a pillow. I might find myself gifting a nice bath set to my Mother In Law this Holiday Season!

Lacy Accessories have some really pretty headband patterns as well as a hair tie, purse, choker and bracelet set, and a few more really nice accessory patterns. I am definitely going to make some of the headbands for myself and my daughter. We both love feminine accessories and these are a great match to our style.

Now for one of the best sections in the book. The Knits for Kids section. While I don't have any children this little anymore, I do know a lot of friends with little bitty ones that would look adorable in many of these knits. There are 11 patterns for baby garments as well as 3 beautiful baby blanket patterns. There is even a pattern for a hat, shawl and leg warmers set for your child's beloved doll. How sweet is that!

The book doesn't stop with just patterns. It has a really nice glossary in the back with illustrations for many of the terms. In it you will find how to do different cast on techniques including Judy's Magic cast on, the crochet cast on, the figure 8 cast on, and many more. It will also tell you how to do several crochet stitches, the Kitchener stitch, an icord bind off, and many other techniques. I find this invaluable because I can never remember how to do the Kitchener and some of the other techniques described in the glossary.

All in all, I found this to be a very well laid out book. The pictures are all well done and shows off the lacework quite nicely. The patterns are easy to follow. The amount and variety of patterns in this book is wonderful. I would have bought it for the shawl patterns alone! There are also quite a few sock patterns that I want to knit from this book, if I ever get past my first pair of socks.

I highly recommend this book to all lace knitters out there, and to anyone that wants to knit lace. It will be a great addition to any knitter's library.
