Resolution (The Talan Revolt #2) by John Blackport Review

Resolution (The Talan Revolt, #2)

 Book Description:

Rick Rivoire used to love the army.

But now he and three other Rainguns are assigned to guard a Duke’s mining camp. The Baron in charge is cruel to the workers. Rick’s long dreamed of rebellion. Perhaps now is the time!

Then the camp is attacked by Lucan, an ambitious necromancer eager to turn the slaves into undead minions. Rick’s duty commands him to delay the chaos of rebellion, until he sees Lucan crushed.

Rick must aid other forces opposing Lucan: kind but brutish ogres, led by humans in war paint with tomahawks. How can he gain their trust?

In a town under siege, he meets the endearing Anya. Is she as innocent as she appears? Or is she a dangerous pawn?

My Review:

As with the first book in the series, this book read a lot like a RPG. I enjoy that quite a bit. I like that there is a limited amount of magic that the casters can use and that there are not infinite lives for the resurrected. You feel more for a character's death if you know that it may be his final one.

As with the first book in the series, the characters are well fleshed out, so that you find yourself really caring about what happens to them. There are characters that you find yourself cheering for and hoping that they make it through the next battle, as well as several characters that you will be hoping a well placed bullet or spell ends their miserable existence.

I got so into this story, that I was disappointed when it ended. It left me wanting more, which says a lot about the writer and his books. I am happy to know that there is more to the story and am eager to read the next book.

I enjoyed this book much more than I did the first one in the series. There was no jumping around on the timeline to confuse me. The battles seemed longer and more intense in the second book as well, which is a bonus for me. Slavery is rampant in the story and I am eager to see how the fight to abolish it plays out in the series. I feel that Rick Rivoire could become quite a leader in future books in the series.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a well written story that involves magic, battles, violence, and characters that you would want to meet in real life. This book is not for younger audiences as it has explicit language, violence, and sexual content.
