In Life, A.D. you have two choices: join the program or face the consequences.
Seventeen-year-old Dez Donnelly crashes headlong into fate on the side of a rural highway, her life ending in a violent collision of steel and screaming brakes. The train that delivers her newly departed soul to the crossroads of the afterlife won’t be carrying her to the sweet hereafter until she accepts her abrupt end and learns to let go of the life she’ll never finish.
Her new reality is conduct manuals, propaganda, and unrelenting staff, all part of a system to ease her transition from life to death, while helping her earn her way out of limbo. Atman City, beautiful and enticing, is an ever-present temptation that is strictly off limits to underage souls. The promise of adventure proves too strong, and beneath the city’s sheen of ethereal majesty, Dez discovers a world teeming with danger.
Welcome to Life, A.D. where being dead doesn’t mean you’re safe, and the only thing harder than getting out of limbo is getting through it.
What would you do if your life was cut short before you even reached 18, with your whole life laid out perfectly before you. What if your dreams of going to college, becoming someone important and changing the world were snatched away from you in an instant? Then, how would you feel if you suddenly were on a train headed to a destination that was not in your plans?
I know how I would react! I would not believe what was happening. I would kick and scream and try my hardest to get back to where I felt I was supposed to be. This is pretty much what Dez feels. She is determined that she is not going to stay in this freaky place where everyone thought they were dead and where there were cheesy propaganda posters everywhere.

And so begins Life A.D. This book was so much fun to read. It is a YA book that deals with death and the afterlife, so there are some sad parts in it. The author handled all the teen drama and sadness with great sensitivity and well written detail.
The characters in this story were all well written and complex. Everyone has an emotional story and are dealing with it one day at a time. The days there are so scheduled that almost every minute is geared toward getting the teens to accept and move on.
I would love to hear that there is a sequel to this book. It left me wanting more. I want to know what happens to the characters that haven't moved on by the end of the book. I won't tell you which ones they are, because I really don't want to ruin anything for you.
This author has taken a subject that has been written to death (no pun intended) and made it fresh and very engaging. There was not one thing I would change about this book. The characters are wonderful, the setting is very well thought out, and the ending was enough that you don't have that hanging on for the next book to find out what happened feeling yet it still leaves you wanting more.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a well written YA story. It has a small amount of language and a couple of violent scenes that may make it upsetting for younger readers. I would recommend this for teens, mature tweens, and adults.
